One of the most important survival skills is the ability to start a fire. In this short video we explore a simple DIY survival tool, a fire starting kit, that I put together. It includes a few store bought elements as well as some simple, DIY modifications designed to help make it easier to start a fire in less than ideal conditions.
I have had a few comments on this video related to the fact that there is no bic lighter present, which is true, but mostly because it wouldn't fit in the available space. While this kit will go along ways towards starting a fire, it is not the only source of fire starting that I carry. I always have at least 2 or 3 bic lighters spread between my pockets and packs. I also started carrying some sticks of fat wood, have various small rolls of duct tape, and added some storm proof matches to my pack as well. Oh, and ranger bands. I also keep some of those handy as well. I am a firm believer after not being able to start the fire referenced in this video, that as many resources as you can comfortably pack are worth having. You never know exactly what conditions you will be faced with and having a wide range of options and resources increases your change at success.
