Today, it is known as Promenade Hill, but it was called "Parade Hill" in 1795 when the city of Hudson's original settlers donated the land to the people of Hudson for a parade and recreation ground. Its shape, landscape and features have changed over the years but it remains the best place in Hudson to view the river that gave the city its name. The park, which sits at the western end of the city's main street, Warren Street, was recently refurbished. On this episode of the History Room on Zoom, we speak with Gail Wittwer-Laird, director of Starr Whitehouse, who was involved in the redesign of Promenade Hill. We also discuss Hudson's 7th Street Park and the land surrounding the Dr. Oliver Bronson House in Hudson.
Gail Wittwer-Laird worked for many years as a landscape architect for NYC Parks. She has won awards for her collaborative design on the Irish Hunger Memorial (2001) and her renovation of Bleecker Street Seating (2012) among others. Starr Whitehouse Hudson projects always bring Gail and her colleagues to the History Room for historical research and images that will inform their design decisions.
