To celebrate what is probably going to be the most fraught election of my lifetime, I thought "why not release that Vivarium and antinatalism video that I've been kicking around for a few months." We'll see how it goes, lol. However things go, take care of yourselves out there.
Vivarium is a 2019 horror movie in which a couple of would-be homeowners are deceived into entering a paranormal dystopian suburb and tasked with raising a strange child. Starring Imogen Poots, Jessie Eisenberg, and Senan Jennings, the film is a fascinatingly domestic Lovecraftian horror, and one of the more disturbing films that I've seen in recent months (though The Substance probably tops it--video coming on that one as soon as I get some time for it). While I enjoyed the movie as a solid little horror flick, what I found most interesting while watching it was the way in which it seems to reveal a certain kind of anxiety that people across the world feel today about the prospect of having children. While most people still consider children an obvious blessing and desire to start families of their own, there is a growing demographic of people who no longer feel that having kids makes sense for them. And whether or not the creators of Vivarium set out to explain this, I think that they succeed in shedding an unusual amount of light onto this issue.
