Bar U Ranch, located near Longview in southern Alberta, is a national historic site that preserves one of Canada's most significant ranching operations from the late 19th to mid-20th century .
Founded in the early 1880s by Fred Stimson and the North‑West Cattle Company, it grew into a massive ranching enterprise—peaking at approximately 160,000 acres, with around 30,000 cattle and 1,000 Percheron horses .
Historical Era Highlights
Fred Stimson (1881–1902): Established the ranch and managed open-range operations with minimal infrastructure, gradually adding buildings and fencing .
George Lane (1902–1925): Former foreman who purchased the ranch, expanded operations, and built an internationally renowned breeding program for Percheron horses and cattle. Notably, the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) visited in 1919 .
