Bernie and Cinder Lumen, individuals with fire-related abilities, decide to move to Element City seeking a new life. Unfortunately, they encounter discrimination from other elemental beings and struggle to find a place they can call home. Despite the challenges, they have a daughter named Ember and eventually establish a convenient store named the Fireplace. The store becomes a symbol of their fire heritage and traditions, attracting a loyal customer base of fellow fire element individuals over time.
Bernie plans to pass on the store to Ember when he retires, but he believes she needs to gain control over her fiery temper first. After granting Ember permission to manage the shop independently, she becomes overwhelmed by the influx of customers and retreats to the basement in distress. During this moment of frustration, Ember's outburst inadvertently damages a water pipe, causing the basement to flood. As a result, Wade Ripple, a water element and city inspector, is summoned to the scene. While Wade notices the plumbing issue, he reluctantly departs for City Hall to report the violation to his employer, Gale Cumulus, an air element, who has the authority to shut down the Fireplace.
Ember tries to catch up with Wade in an attempt to prevent the closure of the store, but unfortunately, she arrives too late.
