Here are the latest updates on car import duties in Ghana as of June 2025 
Car Import Duties in Ghana
The Ghana Revenue Authority GRA determines car import duties based on the type and value of the vehicle. Key charges include 
Import Duty*: ranges from 5% to 20% depending on the vehicle's cylinder capacity and type
Petrol cars:
  1000cc Cylinder capacity 5%
  1001- 3000cc: 10%
  3000cc: 20%
  Diesel cars:
  1500cc: 5%
  1501- 2500cc: 10%
  2500cc: 20%
Value Added Tax VAT*: 12.5% of the duty-inclusive value
National Health Insurance Levy NHIL 2.5% of the duty-inclusive value
Ghana Education Trust Fund GETFUND Levy*: 2.5% of the duty-inclusive value
Other charges*:
African Union Levy: 0.2% or 0.5%
ECOWAS Levy: 0.5%
Special Import Levy: 2%
 Examination Fee: 1%
 Processing Fee: varies
Additional Fees
Port fees*: The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority GPHA  fees for port operations, which can vary depending on the type of vehicle and services required.
Disinfection Fee*: a fee charged by the Ghana Standards Authority for disinfecting imported vehicles.
Vehicle Age Restrictions
Vehicles older than five years attract an extra 50% penalty based on the original value, while brand-new vehicles under six months old are exempt from depreciation-related penalties. There are also plans to ban the importation of salvaged and overaged cars older than 10 years to improve road safety and reduce accidents
