Today saw the harvest of my first Frankies Red dragon fruit. It is a Selenicereus Megalanthus X Hylocereus Polyrhizus. Frankies red is known to have a shallow root system and rust as crazy during Southern California’s winters, worse when very rainy. I got a lot of rust over the last few winters; however, they grew enough to produce a nice canopy. My two plants are 2 ½ years old and flowered for the first time this year.
Even though this type is self-fertile, I cross-pollinated them with mixed pollen and achieved about 85% fruit set. One plant gave two fruits, and the other gave nine. The flowers opened after the first week of September and stayed a staggering 80 days on the branches before the first harvested batch. The green skin changed over a week to yellow, then orange. The thorns do come off easily when ready to harvest. The first fruit harvested had a pleasant taste, a Brix of 19.7, and 156 grams. Definitely a keeper, as long as you do not mind the rust!
