One hundred years ago on June 15, 1925, Washington’s fire horses made their “last run,” pulling a 1905 American LaFrance steam engine in a ceremonial farewell as the city transitioned to motorized fire equipment. On the centennial anniversary, the scene was reenacted with a solemn procession through Capitol Hill to honor the role horses once played in fire service.
The event began at 1 p.m. at the William H. Rumsey Aquatic Center and continued through the streets toward Lincoln Park, featuring uniformed firefighters, vintage equipment, and horse-drawn engines. The tribute drew spectators and history enthusiasts alike, reflecting on a turning point in public safety and paying homage to the legacy of the fire horses.
