“Kyrie”
Missa VIII de Angelis
*************
The “Kyrie eleison” is one of the oldest prayers of the Christian liturgy — a humble, heartfelt plea:
"Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy."
This rendition is taken from the beloved Missa de Angelis, a Gregorian Mass setting commonly used on feasts and solemnities. Its soaring, meditative tones draw the faithful into deeper participation in the Sacred Mysteries.
In light of Musicam Sacram (Instruction on Music in the Liturgy, 1967), this chant fulfills what the Church calls for in sacred music:
"The purpose of sacred music is the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful." (MS #4)
"Gregorian chant, as proper to the Roman liturgy, should be given pride of place." (MS #50)
