I truly thought this was going to be the day I soar, instead received lots of reminders and reviewed basic lessons. It wasn’t my proud day but grateful I walked away without breaking anything.
As far as soaring at Manquin flight park. It is a much harder site, geographically speaking, to catch thermal.
On a good thermic midday condition at a mountain site, you’ll very likely to soar. At Manquin, good soaring flight doesn’t happen so easily. Tow release altitudes is 900-1000ft for most pilots which is rather low and you really have to search for a thermal. Luck is one but I’ve seen more skilled pilots catching thermal and stay in it.
This long day was a reminder I have a loooooong way to go…. sigh…
