Fruitarian History - Part 13 - Figs Aren’t Vegan! #NelsonMandela #Ghandi
Nelson Mandela & Ghandi discuss the history of the fig in ancient Mesopotamia and how it’s not even vegan.
The fig species that would've been native to the area described in the Genesis story (Mesopotamia / Levant region) is almost certainly the common fig (Ficus carica) - the same species still thriving across the Middle East today.
Here's what makes it special:
Ficus carica grows naturally from modern-day Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iran, exactly within the ancient Fertile Crescent — the region long thought to cradle the Garden of Eden myth.
It relies on a tiny wasp (Blastophaga Lienes) for pollination, and then proceeds to die shortly after.
This is significant, because it then means figs aren’t vegan. Some even posit that Adam & Eve ate a fig not an apple. Since eating a fig from that era, would have meant a break in spiritual alignment - from eating something that required death. Creating the beginning of a death cycle and the beginning of karmic debt.
