Here is solo #8 from Advanced Snare Drum Studies by Mitchell Peters.
This solo is a moderate 3/8 tempo and features some tricky roll passages as well as several instances of hairpin roll crescendos and decrescendos.
As always paying close attention to dynamic contrast is a must.
Before you play this solo try tapping out each dynamic from pp to FF to establish your ranges and then match those as the solo progresses.
The solo also contains some forte piano rolls. For these you should play the first hit close to the center of the drum with one hand and then both hands should immediately go to the edge.
Try writing in your stickings so that you have a plan for execution at different tempos. These stickings will change as you get faster or slower so having a plan is a must when working with a conductor, some of which are inconsistent with their tempos from day to day (or even minute to minute).
I am performing the solo at the notated tempo of quarter note =76
I am presenting two versions of the solo here: one with a click track and one without the click track.
I am using a 14"x 5" special edition maple Pearl Philharmonic snare drum with a mix of cable steel and curly snares. The batter head is a Lefima calf head. I am using a small piece of leather to slightly muffle the drum. The sticks are barrel tipped leopard wood that are 70 grams. I make these sticks myself. if you are interested in a pair you can contact me at [email protected]
