【八尾和紙の桂樹舎】おわら風の盆の町の美しい和紙

手漉き一筋にその伝統を守り抜いてきた八尾和紙。
国の伝統工芸品にも指定されており、自然の手ざわり肌ざわりの温かみは時代を越えて人々の心を捉えます。廃校になった山あいの分校を井田川沿いに移築した建物にその全てを展示した和紙文庫は、世界の紙の博物館として、様々な紙製品や民芸品等が数多く展示され、八尾和紙の加工品も販売されています。

吉田桂介さんは「桂樹舎」の創設者で、紙すき職人であり、目利きとしてもよく知られた人物です。2014年に99歳で他界するまで、優れた芸術家や思想家たちとの親交を通して、現代の暮らしにもなじむ数々の和紙製品を世に送り出してきました。

毎年、おわら風の盆の頃になると多くの観光客で賑わう八尾ですが、祭りの無い日常の八尾はどこかなつかしい、ノスタルジックでしっとりと落ち着いた静かな町です。
おいしいおそば屋さんや和菓子屋さんなどを探しながらの町歩きもおすすめです。
商店で吉田さんが手がけたのれんや包装紙をみつけられるかも。

Yatsuo Town, situated in the southern part of Toyama Prefecture and overlooking the Tateyama Mountain Range—one of Japan's most beautiful and majestic mountain ranges—is a charming town of slopes lined with sturdy old houses typical of snow country.
Yatsuo hosts the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival, a representative and fantastical event of Toyama Prefecture held annually from September 1st to 3rd for about 300 years. Visitors from Japan and abroad flock to revel in the festival for three days and nights.

Yatsuo Washi, dedicated solely to hand-made paper, has steadfastly preserved its tradition. Designated as a National Traditional Craft, its natural texture and warmth continue to captivate people across generations. The Washi Bunko, housed in a building relocated from a closed mountain branch school along the Idagawa River, displays its entire collection. Functioning as a world paper museum, it exhibits numerous paper products and folk crafts, while also selling processed Yatsuo Washi items.
