Summary:
In May 2019 SpaceX launched the first 60 of its Starlink satellites. Since these were immediately visible to the unaided eye even from light polluted cities, astronomers were immediately concerned about the future of the night sky.
Over 50,000 new satellites have been proposed for launch in the next decade. I'll review why these satellites are being launched, and when they will be visible in the night sky.
There are no national or international guidelines or laws concerning the brightness of satellites. The astronomical community is working with SpaceX and other satellite companies to minimize the brightness of their satellites. I'll provide links to various workshops which have looked at this problem.
