in this video we explain how high voltage dc (hvdc) transmission works and why it is used for long distance power transfer. normally, the electricity supply in our homes is ac, and most high voltage lines around us also carry ac. but when the distance becomes very large, hvdc power lines become more efficient.
we discuss how ac and dc lines are different, why ac lines face problems like capacitive and inductive interference, and how devices like shunt reactors and shunt capacitors are used to balance voltage. you will also understand why ac lines create humming noise, corona loss and skin effect, and how these issues make long distance ac transmission costly.
after that, we explain why hvdc transmission does not face such problems. with a flat waveform and constant field, hvdc eliminates interference, reduces corona loss, and can transfer thousands of megawatts of power over more than 3000 km without major losses.
finally, we show how an hvdc substation works, how ac supply is converted into dc with converting transformers, filters, igbt and thyristor technology, and then changed back to ac at the receiving end. we also discuss the challenges of measuring hvdc supply and using dc circuit breakers.
