KMA Engages Communities for 2026–2029 Medium-Term Development Plan
The Coordinating Director of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Francis Dwira Darko, revealed that the Assembly has commenced consultations for its 2026–2029 Medium-Term Development Plan.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement held at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Darko emphasized the importance of aligning all developmental projects with the approved medium-term plan. It’s a printed document, and by law, if you are undertaking any development that is not captured in the plan, you are not permitted to proceed, he stated.
He explained that the process is highly participatory, involving community-level consultations across all sub-metros and electoral areas within Kumasi. KMA does not sit in its office and write these plans. We go to the people, hear their concerns, and gather input on their development priorities for the next three years,
The consultations cover critical areas such as roads, water, education, healthcare, and sanitation. Following the engagements, public hearings are held to finalize community needs before incorporating them into the development plan. After this, every year we prepare a budget based on what has been captured,
Mr. Darko also disclosed that preparations for the 2026 budget are underway, and priority will be given to immediate needs such as water, roads, schools, and hospitals.
He appealed to traders and citizens to fulfill their tax obligations to enable the KMA to raise the needed revenue for development projects. We can only develop Kumasi if we have the funds, and that means everyone must pay their taxes, he urged.
Touching on sanitation, he lamented the recurring issue of littering in market areas. We spend money to clean, but the very next day, people dump new rubbish. This drains resources that could be used for other development projects, he said.
Mr. Darko also raised concerns over the theft of streetlight cables, which continues to hinder urban safety efforts. He called on the public to support the KMA in identifying and apprehending those responsible. Let us all work together to protect public property and ensure Kumasi develops.
