The Barbour County Historical Museum in Philippi, West Virginia is one of the strangest and most fascinating small-town museums in Appalachia. Housed inside the old Baltimore & Ohio Railroad depot, it holds treasures that stretch from Civil War relics to local curiosities. But its most famous and eerie exhibits are the Philippi Mummies.
Alongside Civil War relics and local artifacts, the museum also honors Philippi native Ted Cassidy, the actor who played Lurch on The Addams Family. It’s a small-town stop where Appalachian history meets sideshow curiosity.
