The Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble
Soloists: Samson Diamond, Kabelo Motlhomi (violins), Kabelo Monnathebe (viola); Gilbert Tsoke (cello).
This unedited recording of a live performance given by the Buskaid Ensemble and conducted by their founder, Rosemary Nalden, in Holy Trinity Church Braamfontein, Johannesburg, was made in 2005, just seven and a half years after Buskaid was founded. Apart from a couple of the players who had had some very rudimentary teaching before they joined Buskaid, all the performers were complete beginners when they joined Buskaid, with many of them starting after 1997. This performance is of great historic interest, in that this was an ensemble consisting entirely of young Black musicians, all of whom were born in and lived in Soweto – something which would have been entirely impossible just ten years before.
