In today's modern world, plastic is everywhere. From the milk bottle you drink every morning, to the cooking oil jug in your kitchen, and even the water pipes in your garden.
And did you know? Most of these are made from HDPE, or High-Density Polyethylene — a type of plastic that is extremely durable, flexible, widely used, and also one of the easiest plastics to recycle.
HDPE usually carries the familiar triangle symbol with the number 2 inside. If you look closely at the bottom of a milk bottle or a plastic bin, you will see this symbol — a sign that the plastic is highly recyclable.
What makes HDPE special is that even after recycling, it retains its strength and flexibility, meaning it can be reused many times to create new products.
However, only about 10% of all HDPE plastic is properly recycled. So, what happens to the rest? And what journey do those discarded bottles take if they are recycled?
Today, let’s explore, step by step, what happens inside an HDPE recycling factory, where items that seem like trash are given a brand new life.
