Living in Des Moines: Westwood Neighborhood Tour

For our first neighborhood tour, we're highlighting a great neighborhood in Des Moines west. This area is south of Grand to Walnut Creek between 45th St and 63rd St.

Westwood is known for access to excellent Des Moines Public Schools like:

Hanawalt Elementary School
Merrill Middle School
and Roosevelt High School

Bergman Academy is a private school by Greenwood Park that is in the Westwood neighborhood if you'd prefer.

Some approximate stats on the age of homes in the Westwood neighborhood:

12% were built in the year 1900 or before.
10.5% were built between 1900-1920
42% were built between 1920-1940
20% were built between 1940-1960
31% were built after 1960.

You'll find a good mix of colonial, some tudor, cape cod, even some mid century mod! There are 2 stories, 1.5 stories, split levels, ranches - lots of variety.

The home prices are pretty diverse too - in the last year there have been 23 sales and the prices ranged from $133,500 on the low end to $1,175,000 on the high end. The median sales price in the last year was $335,000.

There are a couple really nice parks in the Westwood neighborhood - Greenwood and Ashworth Park - although a lot of locals might just refer to this as Greenwood Park. Anyway you'll find Ashworth pool, a cool splash pad, playground, tennis court, the Art Center, the Rose Garden, and lots of trails both paved and off road in the forest.
