Spread across 25 acres of lush coconut plantation beside the Maha Oya River, this sanctuary was founded to provide care and protection for orphaned elephants found in the wild.

Today, Pinnawala is home to over 90 elephants, making it the world’s largest herd of captive elephants. Each elephant is lovingly cared for, receiving around 76 kilograms of green matter daily along with a specially prepared diet of rice bran and maize.
