🎉 Carnival in the Netherlands: My First Time with My Dutch Boyfriend 🇳🇱 | Full Cultural Vlog + Travel Experience 🌍
Hello everyone! 💕
Welcome back to the channel! This video is super special to me — it's not just a travel vlog, but a colorful, loud, emotional, and eye-opening dive into my very first CARNIVAL celebration in the Netherlands, and I got to experience it all with my amazing Dutch boyfriend 💑🇳🇱
Grab a drink, get cozy, and enjoy this long, immersive storytime + travel vlog hybrid where I take you along for a real Dutch Carnival experience — complete with parades, hilarious costumes, confetti storms, dancing in the streets, food, beer, and some behind-the-scenes moments with my boyfriend's family and friends 🎭🍻
5. 🎉 The Night Before Carnival: Getting Ready
Carnival doesn’t just start — it’s something people prepare for all year.
The night before, we gathered with friends and family, trying on costumes. My boyfriend wore a bright orange jumpsuit, and I went with a sparkly pink butterfly-meets-disco look (yes, pictures are in the vlog).
We painted our faces, packed confetti, and set alarms for the next morning.
Little did I know... I wouldn't sleep a wink.
6. 📸 Day 1: Costumes, Chaos, and Confetti
I woke up to the sound of brass bands outside.
People were already drinking, dancing, and throwing confetti in the air at 9 AM. We joined a local parade route — and it was unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
Floats, satire, drag queens, grandparents in wigs, babies in mini banana suits… You name it.
7. 🤡 Dutch Traditions That Surprised Me
Some things that shocked me:
Everyone calls each other by their “Carnival names”
The town actually changes names during Carnival
People wear the same costume every day, or mix and match pieces
There are "Carnival anthems" that every local knows by heart
Even kids are out till late with their parents, all in costume
And NO ONE judges you for looking ridiculous. It’s kind of beautiful.
8. 🍻 Food, Beer, and Partying Like a Local
Carnival isn’t just drinking — though there’s a lot of that!
There’s also:
Frikandel speciaal
Kroketten & bitterballen
Stamppot for the hungover mornings
And a weirdly satisfying amount of bread and mayo
We danced for 10+ hours, walked from bar to bar, and ended up eating fries with peanut sauce on a curb at 2 AM. Absolute perfection.
9. 🎺 The Parade: Music, Madness, and Magic
The main parade day was the highlight.
Giant floats carried by local clubs, each with its own theme — some political, some hilarious, some magical. It was all handmade, and you could feel the pride in every float.
We followed the brass bands around town, waving flags and blowing whistles. I danced with strangers, hugged people in animal onesies, and just let go.
10. 🍺 Day 2: Local Bars, Brass Bands & Hidden Alleys
The next day was more relaxed — but still festive.
We explored smaller bars, chatted with older locals, and danced to live Oeteldonk music (which I now kinda love). We found a hidden alley turned into a mini disco and spent two hours there.
It was magical in its own chaotic way.
13. 🌍 Cultural Reflections as a Foreigner
As a non-Dutch person, being at Carnival was surreal.
It was funny, loud, a little messy, but deeply rooted in love for community. It made me realize how important tradition can be — even the silly ones.
I never felt like an outsider, even when I didn’t understand the language or the jokes.
14. 💕 Romance, Culture Clashes, and Laughs
Let’s be real — traveling with your partner always brings funny moments.
We had:
A mini fight over costume colors 😂
A moment where I cried happy tears watching a parade float
Endless laughs trying to pronounce Dutch words
One night where we got lost and ended up at a stranger’s garden party
But it made our bond stronger. I saw him in his element, and he shared it with me. I’ll never forget that.
15. ⭐ My Honest Review of Dutch Carnival
Would I recommend it?
100000% YES
Most importantly: join in. You won’t regret it.
18. ❤️ Final Thoughts + Thank You
Carnival gave me a new perspective on Dutch culture, on traditions, and even on my relationship. I felt welcomed, overwhelmed, joyful, and completely exhausted — in the best way.
To my boyfriend: thank you for sharing this wild ride with me.
To his family: dank je wel for treating me like one of your own.
To YOU watching: I hope this vlog gave you a little window into a very special world 🌎
