Marine Corps Artillery and Casualty Officer Richard R. Rodgers set his mind on joining the military at the young and vulnerable age of six, after learning that his father had been killed in action during the Battle of Guam in 1944. As soon as he was old enough, Rodgers entered the U.S. Naval Academy and trained to become a Marine Corps officer. Shortly after graduating, he was deployed to Vietnam, where he served as the artillery officer for the 12th Marines, fighting alongside the 9th Marines—following directly in his father’s footsteps.
