The imaginary domain is characterized as much by narcissistic love as by 'aggressivity' and intractable conflict. Such a situation, as dramatized by the warring couple whose marriage has dissolved into mutual animosity, calls for the role of a symbolic authority, arbiter or judge. This provides the first of a set of minimal definitions that help us approach Lacan's notion of the 'big' symbolic Other, namely, the Other can be understood as point of appeal or locus of truth. To this we can add that the Other plays the part of a 'hovering interlocutor" or field of intelligibility whenever I speak, and the idea that the Other is 'the third in any dialogue', that is, the extra-subjective component that makes dialogue between two egos possible. The Other thus can be thought of providing 'the rules of the game' that enable the making of symboling pacts and agreements that might save us from what we might call the 'mutually assured aggressivity' of the imaginary realm. Who, though, are suicide notes addressed to?
