Insurance Investigator: Paul Caneiro's House Fire Was Arson With Gasoline

Two separate fires. Both intentionally set. Both with gasoline. The insurance company's own expert just told the jury Paul Caneiro's house fire was no accident.

John Lightbody spent 17 years investigating arsons for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office before going private. Chubb Insurance hired him to examine the fire at 27 Tilton Drive. He walked the jury through burn patterns, V-shaped char marks, and two distinct points of origin: one at a basement window well, another near the garage. He ruled out every accidental cause. No electrical failure. No gas leak. No cigarettes. His conclusion: incendiary fires purposely set with ignitable liquid.

The defense got him to admit something else. Without the family waking up and calling 911, the fire would have consumed the entire house. Paul Caneiro has maintained his innocence for seven years.

November 20, 2018: Firefighters found Keith Caneiro, 50, shot five times on his front lawn. Inside the burning mansion: his wife Jennifer, 45, and children Jesse and Sophia, all stabbed. The children died from smoke inhalation.

Hours earlier, a fire broke out at Paul's home eleven miles away. Prosecutors call it a "ruse" to divert suspicion. The motive: Keith had discovered Paul stealing from their businesses and family trusts, and sent an email cutting off Paul's $225,000 salary the night before.

Paul Caneiro, 59, has been jailed without bail for over seven years. If convicted, he dies in prison.
