This week on Awa FM we mark a huge milestone in the Whanganui community. The Brooklyn Battle Annual Touch Tournament is celebrating its 15th year, and it’s bigger than ever. What started as a family’s effort to support their young moko through a difficult cancer journey has grown into one of the most meaningful community sports events on the calendar.
We sat down with Ngareta Patea, co-founder of the Brooklyn’s Love Foundation, to talk about how the tournament came to be, the “beads of courage” that have become a symbol of strength and solidarity, and how the event has evolved over the past decade and a half. Ngareta shares memories of Brooklyn Hati-Bennett, the inspiration behind it all, and the kaupapa that keeps teams and whānau coming back year after year.
From humble beginnings raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer support to now bringing teams from across the country together on Wellington Anniversary weekend, the Brooklyn Battle is about so much more than touch. It’s about community, love, resilience and support for tamariki and whānau when they need it most.
Tune in as we walk through the history, hear powerful stories from Ngareta, and look at where the tournament is now in its 15th year.
