The most hated fly in the world - The Squirmy Wormy - McFly Angler Fly Tying Tutorial

Squirmy worms are one of the most hated flies out there. Many fisherman call them cheater flies, and will refuse to use them, or judge those who do use them. However they are very effective and relatively simple flies to tie. Just a hook, thread and the squirmy worm material. Of course you can add a bead, use dubbing, or dress them up however you like. Simple however does not equal easy, as the squirmy material is extremely difficult to work with. If you tie too tight, you will cut it, and if you use adhesive, most will melt the soft plastic material. However in this video I will show you a few ways I have found that help mitigate some of these challenges.

Now the controversy with Squirmy worms is far deeper than some fisherman just simply thinking they are cheater flies. Many rivers across America, and probably even the world, will ban them from being used. This is because the material is so attractive to fish that they tend to swallow the fly more often than others, making healthy releases more difficult. Even with a barbless hook, when a fish swallows it, the likelihood of them living after that is severely reduced. However that does not mean there is no place for these very effective flies in your fishing arsenal. If you are going to fish a river that bans these, obviously do not use them. We should all respect our local regulations. However if you plan on keeping fish, then by all means, this is a great fly to use. Also in some rivers that dont ban them, it is still ok to use them even if your practicing catch and release. Just make sure you research how to release a fish properly, and try to set the hook a little quicker rather than letting the fish swallow.
