Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look and installing the Curt trailer hitch receiver on a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. And this is what the hitch is gonna look like when it's installed on your vehicle and it is gonna be an exposed cross tube, meaning you're gonna see a good majority of the hitch hanging down, but overall it looks pretty clean. And this one is a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, which I highly recommend. There are inch and a quarter options, but two inch by two is really gonna be the standard size and that's gonna allow you to get a lot greater variety of bike racks, cargo carriers, or ball mounts. Whatever accessory you may load up, you're gonna have a lot more options to play with. All of those accessories will stay in place with a five eighths pin and clip.

This is not included with the hitch. Many times though, with your accessories, they'll have those included. And if you plan on leaving accessories on the back of your Outlander, I would maybe recommend getting a locking pin and clip. It becomes a good deterrent for anyone walking by. They can't just take that pin and clip out and take those accessories with them.

Your plate style safety chain loops are gonna be there in case you plan on pulling a trailer and you'll be able to hook up your safety chains with a standard S hook or even a larger clevis style fairly easily. And speaking of towing, you're gonna wanna adhere to the weight capacities of the hitch. When it comes to towing a trailer, you have a gross trailer weight rating of 3,500 pounds and that's gonna be the weight of the trailer plus the accessories loaded onto it. Tongue weight rating is gonna be mostly your suspended accessories like your cargo carriers and bike racks. And this one's gonna come in at 350 pounds, which is gonna be enough for, you know, a platform, four bike bike rack, potentially on the weight of the bikes or even a cargo carrier on vacation.

Now keep in mind when you're loading up accessories or towing a trailer, you're gonna want to make sure you don't go over those numbers and also check the vehicle's owner's manual to see what the vehicle's capable of towing and then compare that not only with the hitch capacities but also any of the accessories you'll be using as far as your ball and ball mount. And take the lowest number, you don't want to go over any of those. That way you stay safe out on the road. The placement of the receiver opening is actually really good. It does stick out a little bit, which is, it maybe takes away from the aesthetics, but it works out really well for some of your folding accessories like cargo carriers and bike racks.

You can stow 'em in a vertical position and not all vehicles can you do that without it causing issue with contacting the rear fascia. This one being that the pin and clip hole is about even with the rear fascia, you shouldn't have any problems there. Just keep in mind, you're probably not gonna be able to open up that hatch with those in the folded position, but you could always just drop those down and still get full access. Ground clearance is also important, so if the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, we're coming in at 14 inches and that's important for choosing accessories like cargo carriers and bike racks, you're gonna wanna make sure that you get something that's gonna, you know, not drag on the ground as you go up inclines or up hills. So that's something to keep in mind. With this, you should be okay, just you know, have that in the back of your mind when you do hit those inclines. It's mostly gonna be important for choosing a ball mount and you want your trailer as level as possible, so if you have it available, get it planted. Measure from the ground to the top of the coupler, take that measurement and then compare it with the 14 inches and then you can determine the rise or drop necessary to get everything level. I'd be willing to bet that more than likely you will do a small rise depending on your trailer, but having that measurement's gonna make sure that you get the proper height for your ball mount.
