I like to use water-based wipe on poly for guitar necks and maple fingerboards because its simple, dependable and much less toxic than some other finishes. It's forgiving and you can build up as thick a coating as you like before sanding back and polishing or buffing out. It's not susceptible to humidity the way that nitro is. You can also mix it with water-based stains. Min Wax is my preferred brand but it's quite difficult to buy in the UK. In this video I'm re-finishing the fingerboard of a lovely old 1970s Antoria LP copy that I recently re-fretted. The original poly was thick and very brittle and had been sprayed over the original frets and as a result, cracked and splintered with every fret lifted. I sanded back and then re-built up the finish using the wipe on poly tinted with a water based amber stain.
