One of the paradoxes of the position has to do with the net itself, and whether or not a goaltender has to integrate or avoid the posts when retreating. At a certain point, I've come to call this the Decision-Making-Zone (DMZ), which is essentially the area where a goaltender cannot continue to react to a shot as they normally would, but to decide which of many possible save selections to use that would best fit the unfolding situation.
The DMZ carries with it the same challenge that a 3 on 0 would for an offensive team, and while we would expect a goal to be scored on every 3 on 0 given the numbers advantage, the shooting percentage is significantly lower. I would suspect this is because whoever the puck carrier is has several options and limited time to make a decision, rather than just executing on the only available option.
