TITLE: Fugue in A minor
SUBTITLE: for Trumpet with Buttons in D, Viola, and Violoncello
COMPOSER: A.J.S. Bach
PROGRAM NOTES: In order to play this piece correctly, you must first find a violoncellist to play the violoncello part. Then, one player (the violoncellist) will play that part, while the other player plays the Trumpet with Buttons in D in their right hand while the left hand plays the viola. To be played with no more than two players.
ORIGINAL SONG: Pirates of the Caribbean - Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt
Our Findings:
According to A.J.S. Bach's journal, he learned how to play the viola and invented the first (what we call) keyed trumpet (which he referred to as "Trumpet with Buttons in D"). He wrote this fugue to be different from the other fugues, and designed it to be played by himself and one other performer to play the cello part. It is unclear if this piece was ever preformed, but if it was, it probably was preformed as a trio and not a duet, as it is not possible to play the viola with one hand. (no hold a trumpet with one hand at that time.) While we may never know when some of these were composed, this was definetly composed later in his life, when his music became more eradic and unpredictable. At least he resolved with a classic "V I V I V I V I V7 I" ending seen more in the romantic era.
The subject bears a striking resemblance to Pirates of the Caribbean. It is unclear if this influenced the P.O.C. composers Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt or if it is pure coincidence.
