What Happens When Lightning Strikes a Tower? (Part 1)

Looking into this topic raises interesting questions – how much current does the average lightning strike send down to earth (and our grounding systems)? Does all the current dissipate into the earth in one instant? What factors affect the amount of time required for the current to dissipate? Answering these questions will reveal a key reason why it is critical to have an expertly designed grounding system: the current from a fault or a lightning strike can cause a large ground potential rise, where it is possible to encounter dangerous step voltages and touch voltages. Studying the presence of these voltages is a vital part of maintaining human safety.
