Assamese popular 52-year-old singer Zubeen Garg’s funeral, recognized by the Limca Book of Records as the fourth-largest public gathering worldwide & was cremated with full state honours on Tuesday 23 September 2025 at Kamarkuchi village, about 20 km from Guwahati. His mortal remains were taken in a flower-decked ambulance from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex. The singer’s body, draped in the traditional Assamese gamosa and placed inside a cold glass coffin, was accompanied by his 85-year-old father, wife Garima Saikia, and other family members. Thousands of fans walked behind the cortege, raising slogans and singing his songs one last time before the pyre was lit. Zubeen Garg was cremated by his sister, Palmee Borthakur, as crowds chanted his name in grief and reverence. Fans flock to mourn iconic Indian singer Zubeen Garg. At the cremation ground, the crowd sang lines from one of his most popular songs - Mayabini. Garg was a cultural icon in Assam, singing in more than 40 languages and dialects in a career spanning 33 years. Assam declared three days of mourning after his death, with prominent politicians and musicians joining fans from across the region who travelled to Guwahati to pay their last respects to the singer.
