KALIMA
Three Cultures, One Musical Soul

The KALIMA Trio draws from three different roots, yet speaks a single musical language.
Flutist Maria Toro from Spain, bandoneon master Daniele di Bonaventura from Italy, and percussionist Kornél Mogyoró from Hungary came together to create a borderless musical world.
The trio first met on stage at Jazzfest Budapest in the spring of 2024 – at that time as a one-off formation – but the experience of the concert was so powerful that all three knew they had to continue. A year later, in the summer of 2025, they went on a three-concert mini-tour in France and Switzerland, where both they and the audience felt that something special was being born. It was then that they decided to officially form a band.
Their name, KALIMA, refers both to the hot desert wind and to the soul, expressing the sweeping energy and spiritual depth of their music. The trio’s sound lies at the crossroads of contemporary jazz and world music: Mediterranean and South American elements blend in their melodies, while the lyrical bandoneon and the song-like flute rise above the vibrant, finely colored percussion textures.
In September 2025, they went into the studio in Budapest to record their first, self-titled album. The KALIMA record captures the essence of the meeting of these three artists: Mediterranean melodies, Latin pulse, improvisational freedom, and subtle Eastern European melancholy are woven together. It is a faithful snapshot of the delicate balance they have created: the meeting point of poetry and passion, form and freedom, tradition and experimentation.
