411 Jarvis Lane, built in 1939, a New Orleans flair known for ironwork, was once owned by author Gwen Davenport, who wrote the novel “Belvedere” while living in the house with her husband, John Davenport when she penned the Mockingbird Hill neighborhood as the neighborhood of “Hummingbird Hill”. It was also the inspiration for the three films featuring Lynn Aloysius Belvedere portrayed by the late Webb Hollenbeck, who was Clifton Webb. In the television series that aired for five years on American Broadcasting Company from 1985 to 1990, the title character was portrayed by the late Christopher Hewett. Gwen Davenport also authored “Return Engagement”, with “Belvedere” as her well known novel. Nearby, 412 Jarvis Lane, originally built in 1940 under architect Stratton Hammon, is one acre on Jarvis Lane, which was once part of a 6,000 acre land grant by Thomas Jefferson. Made from fieldstone and white painted lap siding clapboard, it features a major detail, a porch light in the middle of the glass transom above the front door, with sidelights on the sides with retractable shutters on hinges.
