The Aspromonte is a mountain mass in Reggio Calabria, southern Italy, and encompasses one of Italy's national parks. The word means "rough" or "white" mountain. The region was once a Greek colony and contains numerous hill towns, giving it the name Grecanica.
We opted to visit first The Castle of Sant'Aniceto (or San Niceto), a Byzantine castle built in the early 11th century. It was an abandoned former tourist attraction, and the road headed up the mountain was washed out, steep, and scary.
After this, we decided against visiting one of the Greek ghost towns infamous for its even more treacherous approach (Rhoghudi). Instead, we traveled up to Pentedatillo, still a tough drive. This town was virtually abandoned and had stunning views. We then had a great traditional lunch at Al Borgo di Mafrica Marcello in Bova before heading back to our hotel in Scilla for the night.
