Generosity (dāna pāramitā) is called the first of the six perfections—not because it is the easiest, but because it opens the heart to the way of compassion and wisdom.
In this teaching from Chapter 12 of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation, H. E. Chogyal Rinpoche explains how true generosity is more than the act of giving—it is the art of letting go.
Rinpoche guides us through the three ways of giving—material support, protection from fear, and the sharing of Dharma—and reminds us that what makes generosity profound is not the object given, but the freedom from attachment with which it is offered.
As generosity is practiced, it naturally increases, matures into perfection, and bears its fruit: a heart unbound by clinging, open to compassion, and aligned with the true spirit of Bodhicitta.
This chapter invites us to reflect: What does it mean to give without self-interest? How does letting go transform not only the receiver, but the giver as well?
