“Main Shayar badnam” is a pathos song from the Hindi film Namak Haram (1973) sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar. The film was directed by the legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee adapted from the English film ‘Becket’. The film stars Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha in the lead roles. Music was composed by the legendary Rahul Dev Burman.
Namak Haram has been adopted from the English classic "Becket", released in early 60s. Two stalwarts of the yester era, Peter O Toole and Richard Burton acted as the two protagonists. Hrishikesh Mukherjee made the indianization of this film with time-tested convictions. Amitabh Bachhan did the Peter O Toole's role, while Rajesh Khanna did Richard Burton's character. Both gave brilliant performances and the roles amazingly fitted their images and characterstics.
This was the second and last time Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna shared screen space after Anand - both directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
This song 'Main shayar badnam' was to be filmed on Raza Murad, but Rajesh Khanna insisted that the song be picturized on him with Raza Murad listening. That's how the song was shot in the film.
Through this cover song, I offer my humble homage to the three legends of yester year namely, Kishore Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Rahuldeb Burman.
