In the townland of Drealistown, Co. Wexford, the ruins of Poul Church have been completely swallowed by nature. You can stand right on top of the walls and never know they are there, hidden beneath a dense canopy of laurel.
But while the ruins are invisible, the stories are impossible to ignore.
In this video, we explore the verified folklore of the "Poul Light", a mysterious death omen recorded in the 1930s that was said to travel from the graveyard to the homes of those about to die. We also uncover the local history of King James II, who is said to have attended his final Mass in these hidden ruins before fleeing Ireland in 1690.
Plus, we look at living memory from the 1920s, recalling how the "Poul Light" was feared by locals walking home from house dances on the dark lanes of South Wexford.
