Devi Mahatmyam, also known as Durga Saptashati, is a Hindu scripture that describes the glory and power of the Divine Mother, or Devi. It is part of the Markandeya Purana, one of the eighteen major Puranas in Hinduism.
The text consists of 700 verses or shlokas divided into thirteen chapters, and it is also known as the Chandi Path or simply Chandi. It extols the glory and power of the Divine Mother, or Devi, in her various forms, including Durga, Kali, and Chandika.
The text describes the battles between the goddess Durga and various demons, with Durga ultimately emerging victorious. It tells the story of the battle between the goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura, who had obtained a boon from Brahma that made him invincible against all male beings. Durga, who was created by the gods and endowed with their powers, waged a fierce battle against Mahishasura and his army of demons and ultimately defeated them, restoring peace to the heavens and the earth.
It is widely recited during Navaratri, a nine-day festival dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mother.
It is one of the most important texts in Hinduism, particularly in the Shakta tradition, which venerates the Divine Mother as the Supreme Being. It is often recited during Navaratri, a nine-day festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the worship of the Divine Mother in her various forms.
The Devi Mahatmyam is believed to have originated in ancient India, possibly around the 6th or 7th century CE, although its exact date of composition is not known. It has been translated into many languages and has had a significant influence on the development of Hinduism, particularly in the worship of the goddess.
It is a powerful spiritual text that invokes the blessings and protection of Devi. It is believed that reciting or listening to the Devi Mahatmyam can grant one spiritual and material benefits, and can help one overcome obstacles and difficulties in life.
