Starting a homestead brings a lot of unexpected moments — and sometimes, those moments come running up your driveway with a tail between their legs. In today’s video, we’re sharing the incredible rescue journey of a stray dog who showed up on our property right as freezing temperatures and heavy rain rolled into Tennessee. This wasn’t just a random visit… it quickly turned into a race against time.

Over several days, we worked to gain the trust of this cold, scared, and completely alone pup we eventually named Rusty. From setting out food to sitting quietly in the rain waiting for him to feel safe, we learned firsthand how emotional and rewarding a real country life dog rescue can be on the homestead. When Rusty finally trusted us enough to approach, we knew we had to get him somewhere warm and safe — so we took him to the Humane Society of Dickson County, a true no-kill shelter that could give him the care he deserved.

We walk through how Rusty ended up here, what we did to protect him from the weather, the challenges of rescuing a stray on raw land, and why moments like this remind us why we chose the homestead lifestyle in the first place.
