Tongren City, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guizhou Province, is located in the northeast of Guizhou Province, in the hinterland of Wuling Mountain Area. It borders Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County of Huaihua City, Hunan Province to the east and Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County of Chongqing City to the north. It is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. The whole territory is dominated by mountains. Most of the area belongs to the mid-subtropical monsoon humid climate zone, with a total area of 18,003 square kilometers. As of June 2023, the city has 2 urban districts and 8 counties. As of the end of 2023, the permanent population of Tongren City is 3.2137 million.
Tongren City has a long history. It was the hinterland of Qianzhong County in the Qin Dynasty. It was changed to Wuling County in the Han Dynasty. It was a county seat in the Shu Han Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Sizhou, Jinzhou, and Qianzhou. In the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, Sizhou and Sinan Xuanwei Si were established. In the Yuan Dynasty, Tongren Daxiaojiang Manyi Military and Civilian Chief Office was established. In the 11th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty, Sizhou and Sinan Xuanweisi were withdrawn, and four prefectures, Tongren, Sinan, Shiqian and Wuluo, were set up in the current territory and placed under the jurisdiction of the newly established Guizhou Province. Tongren is the hometown of calligraphy. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, six calligraphers emerged: Zhou Mian, Zhou Yixiang, Wang Daoxing, Pan Dengyun, Yan Yinliang and Yan Shizhu. There are 2 national nature reserves, 3 national scenic spots, 9 provincial scenic spots, 1 national mining park and 1 national karst geological park. The Shanghai-Kunming Railway, Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway, Tongda Expressway and Sijian Expressway pass through the territory.
In 2024, Tongren City will achieve a regional GDP of 164.981 billion yuan, an increase of 4.9% over the previous year.
