In this clip Dr. Erik Erikson discusses the nature of the intimacy versus isolation stage in his theory of psychosocial development. Dr. Erikson particularly emphasizes that the work done at the previous stage (identity versus role confusion) make intimacy possible. To have a healthy intimate relationship (i.e., a joint identity with a partner), we must first be solid and secure in our own sense of self.
For me, this dynamic is reminiscent of Ru-Paul's famous quote-- "If you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you going to love someone else?"
