Pakistani Anchor BAFFLED at Khawaja Asif's Cluelessness on Abraham Accords

In an interview on Samaa TV, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif was asked what Pakistan would do if the US pressured it to join the Abraham Accords and normalise ties with Israel.

Speaking on the evolving situation in the Middle East, Asif remarked, “I personally believe that a status quo which was being maintained by Israel, and the moral ground they were claiming… they no longer have that moral high ground.”

The anchor then cut him off to double down on the question, asking Asif, "But, Sir are you prepared? Pakistan will be under pressure regarding the Abraham Accords."

The minister then gave a cryptic response followed by a laugh that was not reciprocated, stating, “Don’t worry about that...the name "Abraham" has just as much significance for Pakistan as it does for those involved in the accords."

When pressed by the anchor yet again, Asif declared "We will watch for our own interest.” To which, the anchor asked "Have you done any brainstorming on that internally?"

Asif then claimed that the "brainstorming" was "continuous" and "ongoing", but Pakistan would only act “when we are told to become a part of this accord,” signaling his not-so-surprising cluelessness regarding Islamabad's stance on the issue.

Following the success of the Abraham Accords in 2020, then-Pakistani PM Imran Khan disclosed that the US, under Donald Trump, and "at least one other country" had been urging his administration to normalise ties with Israel. Khan did not reveal the countries' names and did not say whether or not they were from the Muslim world, but explained that "the pressure is because of Israel's deep impact in the United States."

Khan's administration later reiterated that Pakistan would not establish any official bilateral relationship with Israel until a "viable, independent, and contiguous" country is created for and accepted by the Palestinians.

This is presumably the current Shehbaz Sharif-led administration's stance as well, that is, unless, Field Marshal Asim Munir's recent lunch with Trump at the White House caused a shift in priorities.
