By the 1990's much of the lower freight yard in New Bedford, MA had been abandoned or removed and trains stopped running to that part of New Bedford for about a decade. In the early 2000's the track was rebuilt to the yard to haul out contaminated soil from the New Bedford Harbor. A portion of the yard was rebuilt as well but a good section still lay dormant and empty. More recently the rest of the railyard was put back to use as the MBTA Layover Yard as part of the South Coast Rail Project. 6 tracks were built where the lower freight tracks once were and these will be used to store trains overnight and on weekends. This video shows the first use of those tracks (besides testing) for their intended purpose. This was part of two simulated service days at the beginning of March 2025 where four train sets ran between Bridgewater, East Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford simulating revenue service. South Coast Rail is set to open on March 24, 2025.
