This report highlights the 33 years since the demolition of the historic Babri Masjid in Ayodhya — an event that changed the socio-political landscape of India forever. On 6 December 1992, the 16th-century mosque was demolished by extremist mobs, triggering nationwide riots and leaving thousands dead.

The Ram Mandir movement, which began decades earlier, culminated on 22 January 2024 with the Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla. Hindus have long claimed the site to be the birthplace of Lord Ram and believed that a temple once stood there. The dispute dates back to the Mughal era (1528) and intensified from 1853 onward.

In 2019, the Supreme Court awarded the disputed 2.77 acres to a Hindu trust while accepting that the demolition was unlawful. The court also directed that 5 acres of land be allotted to Muslims for a new mosque. In 2020, the UP government allocated land in Dhannipur village, 25 km from Ayodhya city, for the construction of the Muhammad bin Abdullah Masjid and a large Indo-Islamic cultural complex including a 500-bed hospital, schools, community kitchen, and other facilities.

However, despite six years since the court verdict, the Dhannipur project faces delays due to lack of NOCs, funding challenges, and legal objections regarding Waqf land laws. The Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF) has finalized a new traditional design with five minarets and hopes to begin construction by April 2026.
