Creating a Small Dry-scape in the Yard

This small dry-scape was an enjoyable home project to work on. The base materials cost approximately $188.00. I hope that after watching this video ideas come to mind about how you can use the flexible edging to create a design that is to your personal tastes; whether you use sand or other types of materials, such as gravel or pebbles, this project should enhance your yard and offer a break from both using too much water and pulling weeds. Who knows, if you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool, maybe in a side yard you might design a mosaic dolphin. Or possibly the creation of a symbol that represents your personal interests? There are a host of rocks with different colors that offer the opportunity to be creative and do-it-yourself. (A final note: I held off on publishing this video until the small dryscape went through some heavy rainstorms. This small project was completed in November and was not published until mid-February after we had gone through some heavy winter rainstorms, one of which dropped over three inches in less than 24 hours. Glad to say the sand remained fixed in the edging and actually looked pleasantly smooth.)

BASE MATERIALS COST:
1. 1000lb Washed Bulk Sand: $26, which is much less expensive than 25lb commercial bags. (Purchased from Lowes. Forklift raises sand bag and positions it for pouring. A chute on its bottom is untied, releasing the material.)
2. Red Lava Rock bags: $30 ($5.00 per bag)
3. No Dig Flexible Edging by Dimex: $80
4. Extra 8” Nylon Spikes for edging: $40 (Though a 60ft edging box comes with 18 spikes, I needed extra for all the tight turns or angles used.)
5. Commercial Grade Landscape Fabric and 3” Staples (approximately*): $12.00
Total Cost for Base Materials: $188.00

*Bought a 100ft roll and staples for other jobs around yard. The actual cost for 100ft roll was about $28.00
