This week, we’re digging into one of the most beloved holiday tunes of all time — The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire). This perennial favorite has been recorded by jazz and pop artists alike, and it’s a perfect example of a holiday song that functions exactly like a jazz standard. The harmony is elegant and familiar, with just enough twists to keep things interesting, making it a great tune for developing walking bass lines that are smooth, supportive, and lyrical. Because the song is so widely known, it’s one you’re very likely to encounter on holiday gigs and jam sessions. As usual, I’m playing the line on Double Bass here, but this one works beautifully on Bass Guitar too!
