Self-watering trays can develop stagnant water, which may attract pests. Adding an air stone helps oxygenate the water but can slightly increase water temperature. Running the air stone on a timer instead of 24/7 may help limit heat buildup. There is no perfect solution, this is simply a trade-off you should be aware of.
