The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional organization comprising ten countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The combined GDP of ASEAN countries has seen significant growth over recent decades, making the region a global economic powerhouse. In 2023, ASEAN's GDP was over $3.6 trillion, a figure boosted by a blend of export-driven economies, strong domestic consumption, and investments in infrastructure and technology.
GDP per capita, a key indicator of economic prosperity, varies widely across ASEAN countries. Singapore has the highest GDP per capita, reaching nearly $80,000 in recent years, largely due to its highly developed economy, strategic location, and global financial hub status. Conversely, countries like Myanmar and Cambodia have significantly lower GDP per capita, reflecting challenges in industrialization, political instability, and limited infrastructure.
ASEAN’s growth is propelled by industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. However, challenges like inequality, urban-rural divides, and climate risks persist, impacting GDP per capita growth. Efforts toward economic integration, through initiatives like the ASEAN Economic Community, aim to boost trade, investment, and regional cooperation, potentially raising GDP and GDP per capita for the region as a whole.
